Once again, we are pleased to offer Chicago as the host city for the annual conference on self psychology, and The Chicago Marriott Downtown Hotel on Michigan Avenue, in the heart of the "Magnificent Mile," close to world-class museums, theatres, restaurants and the beautiful lakefront, is an ideal venue.

In this, the 26th annual gathering of clinicians from around the world sponsored by the International Council of Self Psychology, we address the many challenges and possibilities of the clinical situation. The clinical experience touches the deepest hopes and anxieties in both therapist and client, and our three plenary panels will cover the range of topics from impasse to transformation, with emphasis on the creative use of the self.

Panel I will explore the real-life issue of clinical impasse, with a rich case presentation by Gianni Nebbiosi and discussions by Alan Kindler and Margaret Black.

Panel II will focus on creativity and innovation with emphasis on using the self of the therapist. Bruce Herzog will present challenging case material followed by discussions from Kati Breckenridge and Ken Newman.

Panel III will deal with the question of the emergence of the self . . . transformative and developmental potentials in the therapeutic process, with Judith Teicholz discussing the clinical/theoretical presentations of Frank Lachmann and Marian Tolpin. As usual, there will be opportunities during two Post-Panel Discussion periods for participants to actively engage the many provocative issues raised by panelists.

The Pre-Conference Program has been a perennial favorite and this year should be no exception. Our pre-conference offers a Beginner's Course taught by Robert J. Leider, a clear and gifted teacher. For the Advanced Course, we depart from the usual clinical framework and with a panel of experts (Marvin Zonis, Charles Strozier, and David Terman), address a critical contemporary issue: Self Psychology in the Age of Terrorism. An additional course - Working with Parents and Families will be taught by Carla Leone and Amy Eldridge. Master Classes on Friday morning will be led by senior clinicians and outstanding teachers from around the country.

Four pre-conference workshops include Beatrice Beebe and Frank Lachmann on Infant Research; George Hagman and Carl Rotenberg on Art (including a visit to the Chicago Art Institute); Howard Bacal and Nancy VanDerHeide on Specificity Theory and Dual Relationships; Iris Hilke, Roz Kindler, Jackie Gotthold, and Mark Smaller, on "We Were All Once Children - How Child Analytic Therapy Informs Adult Therapy."

This year's Kohut Memorial Lecture comes from outside the field of self psychology with a special lecture by a distinguished author and scholar, Professor Eric Santner: The Psychotheology of Everyday Life.

For the 36 different Original Papers and Workshops sessions, we have selected a broad and balanced assortment of thoughtful and relevant presentations reflecting the issues and questions of today, each with sophisticated discussants - all offered in an ideal setting for small group discussion.

Come and join us for what we hope will be another exciting conference in Chicago, with rich opportunities to learn and be together, to meet old and new challenges and to reach for new possibilities.
