Notes from the President

James Fosshage, PhD

March 19, 2005

With great pleasure I announce that we have recently passed our initial goal of 200 members of the International Association for Psychoanalytic Self Psychology (IAPSP) and anticipate continued growth in membership.

We will soon hold elections (via email) for 5 new members to the International Council, the governing board of IAPSP. There are no geographic restrictions on these five members and self-nominations are acceptable. At the moment we are in the final stages of assessing how many additional seats on the Council will be available due to abdication of a few seats by some of the emeritus members. These seats will be opened for elections, but must be filled by persons who come from the same Region. Currently the United States and Canada are divided into the Eastern, Mid-Western and Western Regions. The International Region includes all other countries. There are 17 representatives to the International Council from each of the four Regions. All elected representatives will be elected for 3-year terms and can be re-elected. Jill Gardner, Ph.D. is the Chair of the Representatives Election Committee and will be contacting by email all of our members in the near future.

In an attempt to bring some orderly functioning to address the many needs of IAPSP, I have formed a number of Committees. The Committees, thus far, are as follows:

  1. International Communication and Relations Committee

    Chair of Non-English Speaking Countries:
    Ronald Bodansky, Ph.D.
    Committee Members:
    Erwin Bartosch, Ph.D.
    Josy Fisch, M.D.
    Andrea Harms, Ph.D., Psy.D.
    Hans-Peter Hartmann, M.D.
    Iris Hilke, M.A.
    Sigmund Karterued, M.D., Ph.D.
    Wolfgang Milch, M.D.
    Gianni Nebbiosi, Ph.D.
    Franco Paparo, M.D., Ph.D.
    Paulo Sauberman, M.D.

Chair of English Speaking Countries (except U.S.):
    Gary Rodin, M.D.
    Committee Members:
    Alan Kindler, M.D.
    Samuel Izenberg, M.D.
    Russell Meares, M.D.
    Tessa Philips, M.A.
    Henry Szor, M.D.
    Rosemary Tredgold, B.A., ANZAP
  2. Election Committee for Representatives
    Chair: Jill Gardner, Ph.D.
  3. Election Committee for Officers of International Council
    Chair: Frank Lachmann, Ph.D.
  4. Liason Committee to Organizations
    Chair: Philip Ringstrom , Ph.D., Psy.D.
  5. Liason to Professional Conference Management (PCMI) for Conference Sites and Facilities
    Chair: Joseph Lichtenberg, M.D.
  6. Conference Program Committee
Host Co-Chairs and One Representative from Each Other Regional Division

Other Committees will be formed. In the meantime I welcome your suggestions and interests.

We are all quite excited to have at last an international association that brings together those many persons interested in self psychology to create a strong affiliation and to foster the development and dissemination of self psychological ideas.

I wish to remind you that, as a member, you are listed on the IAPSP Membership Roster located on the IAPSP website (www.psychologyoftheself.com) for purposes of networking and referrals. The Roster is searchable alphabetically and by geographic location.

As a member, you receive a Member Identification Number which provides you access to this IAPSP Newletter, to a variety of online activities, including an interactive online eJournal, reduced-fee writers' workshops, seminars and reading groups, a one-year subscription to the International Journal of Psychoanalytic Self Psychology (note our new journal title), discounted fees for the Annual Conference, discounts to the Psychoanalytic Inquiry Book Series and journals by Analytic Press (1.800.926.6579), and a 20% member discount on all psychoanalytic books by Mental Health Resources (1.877.647.0202 or email at mhr@ulster.net). IAPSP provides valuable avenues for affiliation, participation and networking with colleagues.

Gianni Nebbiosi, Ph.D., Treasurer, and Estelle Shane, Ph.D., Secretary, join me in welcoming your participation.

Best regards,
James Fosshage, Ph.D., President
